SHF 2017 - Diaspora: Armenians and Jews in Singapore

Description

In 19th-century Singapore, a small number of Armenian and Jewish traders and merchants settled here and set up places of worship. This tour through the Armenian Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator, the oldest Christian church in Singapore, and the Maghain Aboth Synagogue, the oldest Jewish synagogue in Southeast Asia, provide insights on these two communities who thrived through enterprise and hard work. Learn more about prominent Armenians and Jews in Singapore such as the Sarkies brothers (the Armenian founders of Raffles Hotel) and David Marshall (Singapore’s first Chief Minister, who was Jewish).
